Buy Back Our Attention

The WHY

The media landscape is flooded with messages designed to make you anxious and keep scrolling. I wanted to flip that. Buy Back Our Attention started as a simple, stubborn idea: what if billboards said something that actually made your day better? No budget, no agency, no playbook. Just a vision and a community willing to believe in it.

WHAT I DID ABOUT IT

I bootstrapped the whole thing from scratch. Knocked on doors. Pitched strangers. Ran a GoFundMe. Managed every vendor relationship from design to print to installation. The community voted on messaging. We set a rule: no fear, no politics, no us-vs-them. Just open questions that made people stop and feel something. When the first board went up, a local news crew showed up on their own.

WHAT SHIPPED

$8k raised through grassroots community fundraising. 3 billboards across Tulsa, OK and Los Angeles, CA. One stayed up for 8 months and reached an estimated millions of impressions. Covered live on local news. The billboard that said "WHAT IF IT WORKED OUT BETTER THAN YOU EXPECTED?" ended up painted on the side of a cross-country van tour. Turns out it did.
